Adadi Mariam Rock-Hewn Church

Carved directly from solid volcanic rock, Adadi Mariam is one of Ethiopia’s southernmost rock-hewn churches. Dating back to the 13th century and associated with the era of King Lalibela, it reflects the architectural and spiritual traditions that define Ethiopian Orthodox heritage.
Unlike the more famous northern churches, Adadi Mariam retains a quiet rural atmosphere.

Debre Libanos Monastery

Perched on the edge of a dramatic highland escarpment, Debre Libanos Monastery is one of Ethiopia’s most revered religious centers. Founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, the monastery remains an active place of pilgrimage and worship.
The journey north from Addis Ababa leads through rolling highlands and traditional villages before opening to breathtaking views of the Jemma River Gorge. Nearby stands the historic Portuguese Bridge Ethiopia, dramatically overlooking the canyon below.

Tiya Stelae Field

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tiya Stelae Field is one of Ethiopia’s most intriguing archaeological destinations. More than 40 standing stone monuments rise from the earth, many engraved with swords, geometric patterns, and symbolic markings whose meanings remain partly mysterious. Believed to date between the 12th and 14th centuries, these monoliths are thought to mark ancient burial sites.
Walking among the stones offers a rare glimpse into Ethiopia’s early civilizations and the unanswered questions of its past.

Wenchi Crater Lake

Set within the caldera of an extinct volcano, Wenchi Crater Lake is one of the country’s most scenic natural escapes. Surrounded by terraced farmland, forested hills, and highland villages, the lake provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and traditional boat crossings. A small island monastery, Cherkos, adds a spiritual dimension to the experience.

Menagesha Suba Forest Park

Shaded walking trails, cool temperatures, and scenic viewpoints make it a refreshing retreat from the city.

Melka Kunture Prehistoric Site

Located along the Awash River, Melka Kunture is one of Ethiopia’s most significant paleoanthropological sites. Archaeological findings here include ancient stone tools and fossil remains dating back over one million years. The site provides valuable insight into early human development and technological evolution, supported by a small museum explaining the discoveries.

Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) Crater Lakes

The town of Bishoftu, formerly known as Debre Zeit, is famous for its chain of volcanic crater lakes. Among the most popular are Lake Hora, Lake Babogaya, and Lake Kuriftu. These lakes are surrounded by gentle hills, resorts, and cafés, offering opportunities for relaxation, kayaking, lakeside walks, and sunset views. Bishoftu’s mild climate and scenic setting make it a favored weekend destination.
